Swine Flu Nevada

Nevada state health officials confirmed Monday that no known cases of Swine Flu exist in the silver state.

The announcement was made in the state capitol during a news conference attended by Governor Jim Gibbons, Nevada Department of Health and Human Services Director Mike Willden, State Health Officer Dr. Mary Guinan, Nevada Highway Patrol Colonel Chris Perry and others.

Officials went on to say, just like every other state, Nevada will be bringing in medication from the federal strategic stockpile as a precautionary measure, and they outlined ways citizens can protect themselves against getting sick.

Officials held the conference at the Nevada State Emergency Operations Center, on 2478 Fairview Drive, at 12:30 p.m.

A Washoe County health worker echoed Sunday what the state officials said today, while she urged the public to stay calm.

"We're just telling people right now be on heightened alert," said Judy Davis of Washoe County District Health Department, on Sunday. "Be a little more aware of what's happening, and we will certainly keep people updated as things develop...if they develop locally."

UPDATE: Influenza and Pneumonia-Associated Hospitalizations and Deaths from August 30, 2009 to April 3, 2010
As of April 16, 2010, the Aggregate Hospitalizations and Deaths Reporting Activity (AHDRA) has concluded for the 2009-2010 flu season. The AHDRA surveillance system was created specifically in response to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, and the system will be maintained for quick implementation in the event of another flu pandemic. CDC will continue to track hospitalizations and deaths through its traditional seasonal flu surveillance systems during the 2010-2011 season. Pneumonia and influenza-related deaths in adults and children will be tracked through the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System. Laboratory confirmed, flu-related deaths in children will continue to be tracked through the Influenza-associated Pediatric Mortality Surveillance system. Laboratory confirmed, flu-related hospitalizations in adults and children will be tracked through the Emerging Infections Program (EIP).

Flu activity in the United States declined slightly from last week and is low nationally; however, some states in the Southeast continue to report regional activity, according to the March 28-April 3, 2010 FluView. Flu activity, caused by either 2009 H1N1 or seasonal flu viruses, may rise and fall, but is expected to continue for weeks in the U.S. Internationally, 2009 H1N1 flu is still circulating, including in the Southern Hemisphere, which is about to enter its flu season.
