Swine Flu IndianaIndiana reported that the first case of swine flu in the state has been confirmed.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe said that samples from a man in northern Indiana had been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as swine flu.
Notre Dame said the student had sought treatment April 22 at the school's health center and a culture sample was sent to state health officials for analysis.
Officials Say Ind. College Student Contracted Swine Flu
Two days later, the school was notified that the virus may have been swine flu – a determination the CDC confirmed Monday.
Notre Dame said the student has fully recovered and is in good health.
"We ask folks if they do have any symptoms to stay home," Monroe said. "There's no need to be scared, but it is time to be vigilant."
State epidemiologists are investigating how the student who tested positive for the virus became infected.
Monroe said they hope to have answers within a few days, but she said the student had not recently traveled to Mexico, where the new flu strain is suspected of causing more than 150 deaths.
Monroe urged that people take common sense precautions, such as washing hands, as well as cutting back on other habits, such as shaking hands with others.
The agency said Sunday that it had sent two flu specimens for tests by the CDC, and health officials said the flu specimens did not match other strains that Indiana has seen this year.
